Languages intent

At St James school, the children are taught French as an additional language. The children begin to learn French from year 3.

Through the learning of another language, we aim to foster our children’s curiosity about the world and other cultures.

Children appreciate and celebrate similarities and differences and appreciate ‘opening up’ other cultures.

They explore patterns and sounds of the language through songs and rhymes, linking spellings, sounds and meanings of words.

As the children move through school, we intend for the children to become more confident and fluent with their speaking of French; engaging in conversation and expressing their thoughts and opinions.

Children develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases.

They also develop their ability to read and write words and simple sentences in French, preparing them for further language learning at secondary school.

We are birds of the same nest

We may wear different skins

We may speak in different tongues,

We may believe in different religions,

We may belong to different cultures,

Yet we all share the same home –

Our Earth

Born on the same planet

Covered by the same skies

Gazing at the same stars

Breathing the same air

We must learn to happily progress together

Or miserably perish together,

For man can live individually,

But can survive only collectively.

Atharva Veda
