Computing

Technology is changing the lives of everyone. Through our computing teaching, we utilise a range of current and relevant technologies to support high-quality computing provision across the curriculum. Pupils are provided with structured opportunities to develop their understanding of programming and computational thinking through the use of tools such as programmable coding devices, micro:bits and Crumble controller sets. We also have a range of iPads and Chromebooks readily available, ensuring that technology is consistently accessible to support learning across subjects. In addition, we use a range of carefully selected applications, including Scratch, Chrome Music Lab and Bee-Bot, which pupils can also access at home to extend their learning. These resources enable pupils to apply their knowledge in practical contexts, supporting progression in problem-solving, logical reasoning and digital literacy.

Our computing curriculum is broken down further into 4 key areas. These include:

- Technology in our lives

- Handling data

- Programming

- Multimedia

Through these areas Teach computing is underpinned by pedagogical principles. These are:

  • Lead with concepts,
  • work together
  • get hands-on
  • unplug, unpack and repack
  • model everything
  • foster program comprehension
  • create projects
  • add variety
  • challenge misconceptions
  • make concrete connections
  • structure lessons
  • read and explore code first

Our Computing Intent

-Children will build their resilience when solving coding or technology problems.

-They will use critical thinking to review and evaluate their work.

-For children to solve problems using code.

-All children will have access to a wide range of technology, apps and resources.

-Children to develop the skills necessary to use computers and digital devices effectively. All children will be responsible digital citizens, knowing how to stay safe online and use the internet responsibly.

-Children will use technology responsibly to develop their awareness of culture and become positive global citizens.

-Children will understand their rights and responsibilities when working in a digital world and know who to talk with over any online concerns or worries.

Our e-safety curriculum, supported by Oak National Academy resources, equips pupils with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. These lessons encourage pupils to think critically about online content and develop an understanding of the challenges they may encounter.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding harmful online ideologies and promoting respectful behaviour
  • Recognising grooming and online manipulation
  • Knowing how to report inappropriate content and manage online interactions safely
  • Exploring how online environments, including algorithms and echo chambers, can influence opinions
  • Identifying and evaluating AI-generated content

All topics are taught in a clear, age-appropriate, and supportive way to ensure pupils feel informed, empowered, and safe when using technology.
